6.B.1. The Consonants.



Y as an initial consonant and does not occur as a final.

Name. YOR YUK from ยักษ์ “A giant”.


R as an initial consonant and N as a final.
(See Note 2. below)
Name. ROR REU-A from เรือ “A boat”.


L as an initial consonant and N as a final.
Name. LOR LING from ลิง “A monkey”.


W as an initial consonant and does not occur as a final.
(See Note 3. below)
Name. WOR WAAN from แหวน “A ring”.

Notes.

  1. Where ย occurs at the end of a syllable it is always part of a combined vowel such as -ัย, -าย, -ุย, เ-ย, etc.
  2. The letter ร (R) is very often pronounced as L although this is quite incorrect.
  3. When ว occurs between two consonants it is almost invariably being used as a vowel with the sound of “OO-A” and not as a consonant.
    When ว occurs at the end of a syllable it is always part of a combined vowel such as -าว, -ิว, เ-ียว, แ-ว, etc.
